When I studied abroad in Japan, I learned that the younger generation of Japanese people are just as curious about America as Americans are about Japanese. After my year of studying abroad ended and I returned to California, I realized that practicing Japanese is very difficult when no one around me speaks Japanese.

– For reading, I upkeep my practice by regularly messaging my Japanese friends and host family and reading children’s stories.

– For listening, I watch JLPT N4-N5 conversations on YouTube.

But what about communication? 

When I’m playing video games, I frequently join Asia servers and play with Japanese players to practice speaking and communicating. But games can only do so much. I realized there isn’t an effective platform for Japanese people and Americans to connect. With that, I wanted to create a way for Americans and Japanese people to better connect. That’s when my friend and I came up with Bunka Bond Education.

Where did the name come from?

We wanted a name that would both be easy to pronounce for both English and Japanese speakers, and a name that would convey what the project is about. The name “Bunka” comes from the Japanese word 文化 (Bun-ka) meaning “Culture” and the word “Bond”: a relationship between people or groups based on shared feelings, interests, or experiences. Our aim is to teach Japanese people natural English phrases that they can use with English speakers and vice versa. We hope to one day have an official platform for Japanese and English speakers to regularly connect to help each other learn to communicate in their desired languages.

私が日本に留学していたとき、日本の若い世代の人たちが、アメリカ人が日本に対して抱くのと同じように、アメリカに対して興味を持っていることに気づきました。

１年間の留学を終えてアメリカのカリフォルニアに帰国したあと、周りに日本語を話す人がほとんどいない環境ということもあり、私一人で日本語の練習を続けるのがとても難しいということを強く実感しました。

例えば、読む練習としては、日本の友人やホストファミリーと定期的にメッセージのやり取りをしたり、子ども向けの物語を読んだりしています。

また、聞く練習としては、YouTubeなどでJLPT N4〜N5レベルの会話動画をよく見て練習をしています。

では、会話の練習はどうすればいいのでしょうか？

私はよくビデオゲームをするときにアジアサーバーに参加し、日本にいるプレイヤーと一緒に遊びながら、日本語を話す練習をしています。
しかし、実際にはゲームだけでは限界があります。

そのとき、日本人とアメリカ人がもっと自然につながれる効果的なプラットフォームがないことに気づいたのです。

そこで、アメリカと日本の人々がより深くつながれる方法を作りたいと思い、留学していた時に出会った友人と一緒に考えたのが 「Bunka Bond Education」 です。

Bunka Bond Educationの名前の由来は？
英語と日本語、どちらの話者にも発音しやすく、そしてこのプロジェクトの目的を表せる名前にしたかったのです。
「Bunka（文化）」は日本語で、英語の「Culture」を意味し、
「Bond」は「人やグループの間に生まれる共感や興味、経験を通じた絆」を意味します。

私たちの目標は、日本の人々に自然な英語表現を学んでもらい、英語話者には自然な日本語を学んでもらうことです。
将来的には、日本語話者と英語話者が定期的に交流し、互いに学び合いながら言語コミュニケーションを深めていけるような公式プラットフォームを作ることを目指しています。
